The Creative Work Week
It’s becoming a trend inside of creative companies. But most importantly, it’s becoming a proven theory of how the usual work week isn’t the most effective model.
Why does it work
Our company is based mostly on freelancers and people who work from home. This helps us to cut costs, and offer reliable prices. But mostly, it allows for each of our creative freelancers to focus completely on a project without any interruption. A regular office atmosphere is full of daily interruption. With no interruption, our time is more focused and ultimately it becomes extremely productive. Thus we don’t need an entire work day to accommodate what most people do from nine to five.
But why not Friday?
Fridays we either don’t work, or work on projects away from the company. We have publications of our own, as well as future development work that we want to do as a part of P41. Patrick works hard throughout the week and sometimes a Friday off does some good. Because we are so productive throughout the week with no interruption, we are able to work four day work weeks and still accomplish more than what most people inside big offices could do in a full week. Remember, designers and creative people need no interruption - so this becomes a part of our business model.
Most importantly, we used to get a lot of projects that became “urgent” on Fridays, then we had to work over the weekend to accommodate the needs of that client. We realized that people in regular office atmospheres are cursed with the bad luck of interruption as well. Which then makes it very difficult for people to plan out their work week, and wind up contacting us Friday evening to fix errors or have a meeting. In that sense, it makes it seem like the project isn’t important enough for you to plan for it early in the week.
Ultimately, we are available on Friday, but only by appointment. We are there, we are sitting at our computers typing away, but we just won’t answer. We are sorry if you don’t agree with our work week business model, but understand that it will ultimately lead to a better product for you.
